McDonald’s announces meat alternative range for 2021

Fast food chain McDonald’s has announced plans to release a ‘McPlant’ range which will consist of plant-based burgers, chicken alternatives and veggie breakfast items.

McDonald’s confirmed that the range will become available in 2021 after the new menu is tested across a series of markets.

The move follows a trial of meat-alternatives by McDonald’s earlier this year, with a range of plant-based products rolled out across 100 stores in Canada earlier this year.

The ‘McPlant’ range is expected to be produced by Beyond Meat, the company which supplied the plant-based burgers to the Canadian stores this year.

“We are excited about the opportunity because we believe we have a proven, delicious-tasting product.”

Commenting on the new menu, McDonald’s international president, Ian Borden, said: “As we have worked to better understand customer demand, some markets around the world have tested plant-based products.

“Informed by those learnings, we have created a delicious burger that will be the first menu option in a plant-based platform we are calling McPlant. McPlant is crafted exclusively for McDonald’s, by McDonald’s.

“In the future, McPlant could extend across a line of plant-based products including burgers, chicken-substitutes and breakfast sandwiches.

“And, we expect some markets will test the burger next year. We are excited about the opportunity because we believe we have a proven, delicious-tasting product. When customers are ready for it, we are ready for them.”
