Homegrown lamb production and the value it adds to the Halal market has been showcased at the Birmingham Eid Mela by AHDB Beef and Lamb.
The organisation distributed its Halal Meat Facts booklet during the event, illustrating the role Halal has to play in supporting the lamb and beef sector in the UK, as well as identifying export opportunities. AHDB Beef and Lamb also highlighted specific cuts with butchery and cooking demonstrations.
Dr Phil Hadley, AHDB Beef and Lamb head of global supply chain development, said: “The Halal market is growing and adds value to the sheep sector in particular. The Eid Mela event in Birmingham was the ideal platform for us to raise awareness of home grown lamb production, the quality and versatility and how best cook with it using innovative new cuts and recipes.
Muslims consume around 20% of all sheep meat sold in England, with consumption peaking around the Eid and Ramadan festivals. By 2030, the UK Muslim population is expected to rise to 5.5 million people.
