Andrea Leadsom has been appointed Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in Theresa May’s new government, replacing Liz Truss who is the new Secretary of State for Justice.

Andrea Leadsom is the new Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

The announcement, which followed the appointment of Truss to Secretary of State for Justice after Michael Gove’s sacking, was made on Theresa May’s first full day as Prime Minister.

Until Monday 11th July, Leadsom was in the race to become Prime Minister, however pulled out stating that she did not believe she had “sufficient support to win a strong and stable government should I win the leadership election.”

Leadsom served as Minister of State for Energy at the Department of Energy and Climate Change from May 2015. She also held the position of Economic Secretary to the Treasury from April 2014.

Truss, who also becomes the first female Lord Chancellor, took to Twitter to comment on her new role, writing: “Delighted to be appointed Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor. Looking forward to getting stuck in.”

She also added: “Sad to be leaving Defra after two fantastic years. Great team and loved working with farmers, food producers and environmental groups.”

Truss was appointed Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in July 2014 and launched the five-year Great British Food campaign aimed at championing the country’s produce. The campaign began this year with the Year of British Food.
