The British Meat Processors Association (BMPA) said it will be querying the World Organisation for Animal Health's (WOAH) decision to delay Britain’s application for BSE negligible risk status.
WOAH has decided not to permit the UK to submit its application in 2023, which will result in the risk status not being regained until 2025.
BMPA said that WOAH’s explanation imposed a transition period. WOAH commented: “WOAH acknowledges the challenges and time it takes for members to modify and adapt their current BSE risk management measures and surveillance systems in accordance with the new BSE standards, hence the one-year delay.”
BMPA’s Nan Jones will be querying the decision on BMPA members’ behalf.
