Retailers are being invited to enter their best British turkey products into the annual British Turkey Awards which is now open for entries.
The awards are made up of 11 carefully selected categories – including retail and foodservice sectors - and entries are expected to showcase the best in innovation, convenience, including Christmas turkeys for all budgets, and the variety of fresh, everyday cuts in store for all year round purchase.
An independent panel of judges including a consumer, a consultant chef, plus journalists from food and catering magazines will be tasked with scrutinising the products against set criteria such as taste, appearance, quality, packaging and value for money.
The Retailer of the Year category, last year won by Asda for the fourth year in a row, gives retailers the opportunity to present their entire range of turkey cuts on sale throughout the year, such as breast fillets, steaks, mince and strips.
The annual Student Chef of the Year competition also forms part of the awards, with young catering students from colleges across the country competing to create the best turkey starter and main course, to be served at The Savoy, during the ceremony on 25th September.
Nicola Compton, chair of the British Turkey Federation’s Publicity and Marketing committee said: “This is our 18th year of the British Turkey Awards and each time we see some fantastic new products to suit all meal occasions and consumers have a better choice than ever. It shows the retailers are really supporting the industry and we hope to see some more exciting entries in 2014. There really is no reason why turkey should not be part of the weekly shop.”
