On Wednesday 13th February, over 90 people gathered together for a reception at Pewterers’ Hall in London to say farewell to Liz Murphy, the outgoing CEO of The International Meat Trade Association (IMTA).
Liz started her career in the meat industry at the Meat and Livestock Commission in 1974, where she remained until 1989 when she then established her own consultancy business.
In 2006 she was appointed chief executive of IMTA .
IMTA describes Liz’s knowledge and expertise of the industry as ‘exceptional’, and she is highly regarded both in the UK and internationally.
Respect for Liz and her wide popularity was also testified by the attendance of senior figures from across Europe, Uruguay, New Zealand and Australia.
Margaret Boanas, chairman at IMTA explains: “It was a joyous occasion, tinged with sadness at Liz’s departure.
“In true meat trade style the evening progressed to the Butchers Hook and Cleaver in Smithfield where conversations continued, until late into the night.”
Liz Murphy was also recently recognised for her outstanding contribution to the meat industry at the annual Women In Meat Industry Awards last November, being presented with the Meat Businesswoman Award – Trade Body.
Commenting on the Award Liz said: “I wish to say a big thank you to those who nominated and voted for me. Winning this award shortly after announcing my pending retirement was very special and a wonderful way to round-off what has been an interesting and varied career. I will continue to watch the meat industry with interest."
Liz Murphy is succeeded by Katie Doherty, formerly IMTA’s policy director.
