Labour donor Dale Vince OBE has stated his desire to remove compulsory meat and dairy from school meals across England.
Currently, Government school food guidelines recommend that children are fed a portion of meat or poultry on three or more days each week.
The guidelines also state that manufactured meat and poultry products should be eaten “no more than once each week in primary schools and twice each week in secondary schools”.
Speaking at the Labour conference in Liverpool, Dale Vince, who has donated over £5 million to the Labour party, said: “There are schools which want to go further. They don’t want meat and dairy on the menu perhaps every day of the week or even at all.
“But it is the law of the land. I am hoping to have a conversation with the new Government to encourage them to change the law.”
Vince stated that vegan diets were healthier than eating meat, and said he planned to ask Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson to include “climate and sustainability” in the school curriculum.
However, Vince stated at the conference that he was not against farmers: “They have to be part of the move to net zero, they have to move away from animal agriculture, we know that the science tells us that - and they already grow grass to feed to animals.”
