June 9th was a red letter day for Marel’s UK operation with the formal opening of a new office in Birmingham. The new location will serve as the sales and service centre for Marel in the United Kingdom & Ireland, and is part of an on-going strategy to bring the company closer to its customers.

All sales and service activities that were hitherto based at Marel’s manufacturing facility in Colchester will now be under one roof at the new office in Birmingham, which is located in the prestigious Birmingham Business Park near to the NEC.

The new building has been extensively remodelled to Marel’s corporate specifications and includes spacious open office space, a Marel showcase area, a workshop facility and a bistro kitchen for customers and staff. This contemporary and modern approach to the office working environment is part of a Marel policy of modelling all its buildings throughout the world on corporate lines with clean spacious design.

Currently 214 employees work for Marel in the UK & Ireland, 85 of which work for sales and service, with their primary location now being the new Birmingham sales and service office. 129 employees are still based in Colchester where the manufacturing of Marel’s end of line products is based. The company employs more the 4,000 people worldwide and has a global turnover in excess of €1.0 billion.

Marel confidently states that it is the leading global provider of advanced processing systems and services to the poultry, meat and fish industries. The United Kingdom and Ireland are identified as important growth markets for Marel and the company believes it will further strengthen its position and offer better service to both new and existing customers via the new centrally located office. The facility also has the very latest in communication software available for its service back-up to customers.

The formal opening of the office was made by Arni Oddur Thordarson, the CEO of Marel, together with Graeme Rolinson, general manager of Marel’s Sales and Service UK & Ireland. Mr Thordarson paid tribute to the Marel team and also said how important the UK market is to Marel as one which is in the forefront of adding value and product innovation.

Graeme Rolinson was enthusiastic about future prospects: “The opening of the new office in Birmingham is an important step for Marel and we look forward to strengthening our partnership with customers in this important market. With the new office we are improving and investing in our business which will deliver better solutions and services to our customers. The new office has been designed to help us meet our customer needs as well as providing the best working environment possible for our employees.
