Past president of the London Retail Meat Traders Association and butcher at Frank Godfrey Butchers Peter Godfrey has passed away.

Peter Godfrey, butcher

Peter Godfrey.

A grandson of founder Frank Godfrey, Peter took over the running of London based Frank Godfrey Butchers during the 1970s with outlets in Green Lanes, Tottenham, Highbury, Islington, Stoke Newington and Seymour Place, Marylebone.

He made himself responsible, with the help of sons Christopher, Jeremy, and Philip, for the consolidation and development of the business into the website Godfreys.co, with a modern Q Guild accredited retail store in Highbury Barn, a specialist FSA-approved catering unit in Finsbury Park, and a nationwide online facility.

The shop won many national and international awards, and was renowned for top-quality products and bespoke service, not only among the north London elite, but also by many high-ranking restaurants and hotels throughout the capital and southeast.

Supported by his late wife Betty, Peter was an active and much-respected member and elder statesman of North Central London Butchers, and the London Retail Meat Traders Association, serving as president in 1985-1986.

He was a member of The Royal Smithfield Club and a founder member of the Q Guild, and was an avid supporter of the Butchers and Drovers Charitable Institute, as well as a Freeman of the City of London and Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Butchers.

Peter will be much missed by his family, as well as friends, and many colleagues in the London meat trade, who will remember him for his quiet, unassuming manner and gentle man approach as well as his integrity and many achievements.
