Sainsbury's said the new cardboard packaging would save 300 tonnes of plastic a year.

Sainsbury's is rolling out cardboard trays across its Taste the Difference and by Sainsbury's breaded chicken lines, which the retailer said would save 300 tonnes of plastic a year.

The new packaging will also be rolling out through the summer across seasonal chicken products, including Sainbury's finger food and BBQ ranges. The retailer said the more sustainably packaged range will offer breaded goujons, nuggets, schnitzels and more.

The cardboard trays across the breaded chicken ranges are recyclable, and can be recycled at home to reduce household waste.

Claire Hughes, director of product and innovation at Sainsbury’s, said: “Together with changes to our breaded fish and chicken packaging, we are set to save 694 tonnes of plastic a year – a significant step towards our plastic reduction goals.”
