“Supermarkets are tripping over themselves to supply locally sourced foods,” suggests Food and Farming Minister George Eustice.
He told delegates at the AHDB Outlook Conference that local sourcing of quality food and the growing meat export market together present two great opportunities for British agriculture.
He indicated that DEFRA is particularly keen to promote meat exports to non-EU countries. New in-roads have been made into the Chinese and Australian markets where there is a strong demand for top quality British meat. The Minister is keen to facilitate exports to Japan in particular. DEFRA vets are being supported in their efforts to get Japanese government vets to visit the UK so that the appropriate export licences can be granted.
