As food manufacturers face growing pressure to reduce waste, extend shelf life and meet increasingly stringent safety requirements, leak detection technology is becoming a critical investment across the production floor.

The industry is rapidly moving away from manual spot checks and destructive testing methods in favour of automated, in-line inspection systems capable of verifying every package in real time.
One of the latest developments in this area comes from Bizerba, with the introduction of LeakSecure, a compact in-line leak detection solution designed specifically for Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) applications using CO2.
In an interview, Carole Besnard, product manager for machine vision at Bizerba, explained how LeakSecure reflects wider trends shaping the future of food safety, quality assurance and operational efficiency.
The shift toward 100% inspection
Traditionally, many food producers relied on random sampling and off-line testing to identify packaging defects. While effective to a degree, these methods can allow leaks to go undetected between checks, increasing the risk of spoilage and product waste.
“Packaging needs to stay perfectly sealed to keep food fresh throughout its shelf life,” said Besnard. “Even small leaks can let gas escape, leading to spoilage.”
This challenge is particularly important in MAP applications, where CO2 plays a key role in preserving freshness for products such as meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, ready meals and baked goods.
LeakSecure addresses this issue by automatically inspecting every tray directly on the production line. By continuously verifying package integrity, manufacturers gain greater confidence in product quality while maintaining throughput.
Meeting modern packaging challenges
Sustainability initiatives are also changing inspection requirements. As manufacturers adopt thinner films and lighter materials to reduce plastic consumption, packaging can become more susceptible to micro-perforations, weak seals and corner damage.
According to Besnard, these smaller defects are becoming increasingly common and more difficult to detect using traditional methods.
LeakSecure uses controlled pressure and advanced CO2 sensing technology to identify leaking packs quickly and accurately. Beyond detection, the system can also help manufacturers identify recurring failure points, providing valuable insight into packaging performance and production processes.
Integrated quality control
Another growing trend is the demand for consolidated inspection solutions. Food producers increasingly want systems capable of performing multiple quality checks within a single footprint.
LeakSecure has been designed to work alongside Bizerba’s SealSecure technology, combining leak detection with visual seal inspection. Additional functions, including label verification, can also be integrated into the workflow.
The result is a comprehensive inspection solution that helps improve traceability, reduce waste and minimise rework while supporting greater operational efficiency.
Compact design, simple integration
Historically, advanced inspection equipment often required significant line modifications and valuable production space. LeakSecure has been developed to overcome these challenges with a compact footprint of just 300mm wide.

Industry professionals will have the opportunity to see LeakSecure firsthand at the PPMA Show, taking place from 22nd-24th September 2026. Bizerba will be showcasing how intelligent, in-line leak detection can help food manufacturers strengthen packaging integrity, improve quality assurance and support sustainability goals in an increasingly demanding market.
