Britain’s Best Butcher’s Shop finalists 2023 revealed
All roads lead to the Birmingham Hilton Metropole on 12th September where this year’s meat industry awards will be staged and the winners announced.
There are 20 awards up for grabs and organisers have now revealed more details of this year’s finalists for the prestigious Britain’s Best Butchers Shop award.
Finalist: Ellisons Butchers
The shop is located in the small village of Cullingworth, just west of Bradford and south of Keighley where the countryside is used mainly for beef and sheep farming.
The business has been in the Ellison family for about 50 years and is staffed by five butchers and a number of part-time staff.
All produce is British and sourced locally when possible. The lamb and beef comes from the Yorkshire Dales and the free range pork comes from Honey Pot Farm in Wilsden, West Yorkshire.
Finalist: Owen Taylor & Sons Ltd
The shop is located on Main Road, Alfreton, in front of the Owen Taylor catering supply unit that supplies the meat for retail sale in the shop.
All of the beef, lamb, pork and poultry is sourced from local farms. In the words of the manager, he has one of the best produce larders possible and is able to source well prepared and mature meat as and when required.
The business boasts many awards attained for both quality products and for the business itself.
Finalist: The Catering Butcher (HH Jackson)
The company heritage goes back to 1926 and these days has a fifth-generation member of the family working in the shop.
The shop itself is situated on the side of the Catering Butcher factory which is located on an industrial road in Stoke on Trent. The shop is called The Factory Shop and is open to the general public.
As well as wide range of fresh cuts, the shop sells an interesting range of added value products which are rotated on a regular basis to maintain the interest of both new and very loyal customers. This is a busy, vibrant retail outlet.
Finalist: Giglis Butchers
Giglis is situated on St Albans Road, Lytham St Annes. On one side is the butcher’s shop and on the other a bistro and coffee shop. These are run as separate businesses with the majority of customers using both.
The shop sells a variety of fresh meat cuts and value-added products including bacon plus a wide range of freshly baked pies which sell in substantial volumes, ranging from cold eating pork pies to steak and ale pies, all of which are produced in different sizes to suit most customers.
Sustainability is a very important part of the ongoing business strategy.
