WCB raise over £60,000 following Kilimanjaro climb
A team representing the Worshipful Company of Butchers Livery Company (WCB), have successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and in the process raised over £60,000.
The Cure Parkinson’s Trust was the chosen charity.
Speaking at Saddlers Hall in London, at a recent WCB Court Lunch, David Baker said: “Two years ago, in the pub, what seemed like a good way of fundraising soon became a reality. Kilimanjaro was the target and I soon had 9 other ‘very keen’ volunteers to join in on sharing a lifetime opportunity of conquering the largest mountain in Africa,
“The Cure Parkinson’s Trust was our charity and a very high target of £100,000 was set.
“On March 8th we set off on our trip. Tensions were high, as facing the unknown was lurking in front of us and we didn’t quite know what to expect.
“On the journey up towards the mountain we started to get some views of Kilimanjaro. It was an awesome sight as we approached the gate to the national park. We were greeted by 38 porters, guides, helpers and Milton the cook. These people were soon to become our family for the next 6 days.
“When we finally reached the summit of Gillman’s Point at 5,685m, it took a few seconds for it to sink in, but we had done it and all of us had made it. Emotions were uncontrollable, with tears of joy and success. This amazing adventure had only been possible because of the strength and resilience of the people within the team.
The team set off on March 8th.
“On top of that, we have so far raised over £60,000 and it is all thanks to those who supported the climb and we cannot thank everyone enough for helping us to achieve that.”
The team
The team comprised David Baker, Tim Stone, Jo Stone, Martin Pointon, Steve Chick, Liz Alexander, Andrew Parker, Lucinda Baker, Charles Baker and Lizzie Baker.
David concluded: “I will sum-up with this, a saying I heard on the trip from one of our guides that had a real impact on me…… ‘Pain is temporary, pride is forever’.”
