Mosa Meat plans to develop laboratory-grown minced meat with a view to bringing it to the mass market within five years, according to a recent report by the BBC.

Using stem cell technology researchers developed a prototype burger two years ago at a cost of £215,000.

The commercial company, headed up by Peter Verstrate has been formed by Maastricht University, the Netherlands, together with scientist, Professor Mark Post who developed the stem cell burger.

The researchers say the driver behind all this is the growing global demand for meat. They claim the energy costs to provide product using just traditional farming methods would be substantial so alternatives need to be explored.

Professor Mark Post said: "I am confident we will have it on the market in five years."
