Traditional Halal Limited has launched a halal certification scheme which has been developed for meat and poultry that is produced without the use of stunning.

According to news site Halal Focus, the scheme, which has been developed to enhance welfare standards, training and skills in the non-stun meat sector as well as improve the halal meat supply chain with quality, consistency and sustainability, is said to be available for slaughterhouses, cutting plants, meat retailers, wholesalers, restaurants and takeaways nationwide.

The site reports that the scheme was launched at a recent event held in Manchester attended by Islamic scholars, community leaders and industry representatives. It was officiated by the Halal Food Authority (HFA) and the Halal Food Foundation.

Dr Abdul Matin Khan, chairman of Traditional Halal and HFA, commented: “We are fully committed to promoting halal trade and to supporting the traditional way of halal slaughter.”

Saqib Mohammed, chief executive of Traditional Halal and HFA, added: “We have developed animal welfare training for our supervisors, sluaghtermen and site operators which will be offered to the applicants free of charge under this scheme.”

The new certification is being supported by Euro Quality Lambs, Gafoor Pure Halal, Halal Kitchen, Worldwide Cash and Carry and Iqbal Poultry.
