Tesco is to start selling 100% plant-based steak from Vivera in its stores across the UK.
From 21st May, Tesco will be selling the Vivera Veggie Steak for £2.99 across 460 stores across the UK.
This is a worldwide introduction for Tesco, and it is said to be the first supermarket in the world to sell the product in its stores.
This 100% plant-based steak uses ingredients such as wheat and soy which allows both vegetarians and vegans to enjoy this product.
Gert Jan Gombert of Vivera commented: “The smell, taste and bite can hardly be distinguished from real steak and we are convinced that this product will meet a large need of consumers.”
He is of the belief it is “very important that we eat less meat, both for our own health, animal welfare and for our planet”.
The plant-based steak is one of a number of recent meat-free alternative products to be launched, although the world's meat production is projected to double by 2050 according to FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN).
Vivera's range is already available in 23 European countries and around 25,000 supermarkets.
On 29th and 30th May, Vivera will present its plant-based steak at the PLMA exhibition at the RAI Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
Other than Tesco, the Vivera veggie steaks will also be found in other large supermarket chains in the second half of 2018.
