Awal Fuseini, AHDB’s senior halal sector manager has been named as a 2025 Nuffield Scholar and will be looking to shine a spotlight on the development of the UK’s halal meat sector.
Commenting on his achievement, Fuseini, an animal scientist, specialising in the halal sector said: “This is undoubtedly the best news of the year for personal development and a chance to add value to this wonderful industry. To be named a 2025 Nuffield Scholar. I must first thank my colleague, Izak van Heerden for his encouragements to get started, Rizvan Khalid and Dr Phil Hadley for investing their time to act as my dependable referees, and to the best employer in NATO, AHDB, for allowing me to embark on this journey.”
Fuseini’s focus will be on ‘Developing a resilient UK halal meat production system for domestic and export markets.’
The 2025 scholars will commence their studies next year and Rupert Alers-Hankey, director at the Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust, said: “Applications this year were incredibly strong, which made the job of our selection committee particularly challenging. This is my first year as director and I have been so impressed by the cohort of 2025 scholars, who come from a wide variety of backgrounds and sectors.”
He continued: “Nuffield Farming Scholarships help develop future leaders in the UK’s agriculture and rural sectors.”
Among the first to congratulate Fuseini publicly were Euro Quality Lamb’s managing director, Rizvan Khalid and IMTA chairman, Margaret Boanas. Khalid said: “Fantastic, the learning never stops! Look forward to reading your findings.” Margaret added: “Huge congratulations. This is a real achievement.”
Fuseini’s sponsors are Central Region Farmers Trust and Three Counties Agriculture Society.
