The BMPA and Harper Adams University are jointly holding a panel meeting on 14th November at the COP30 in Belem, Brazil. The science-led panel is titled “Ruminant livestock innovation to deliver human nutrition and improve environmental outcome”.

Science-led debate

The panel will feature a distinguished list of speakers including Professor Michael Lee, Harper Adams’ Vice Principal, Dr. Macauley Jones of Beef + Lamb New Zealand, Rachael Madeley-Davies head of environment at Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), Dr Ceris Jones (moderator) of COP Farmers’ Constituency and Cranfield University, Jenny Brunton, farmer and senior policy adviser at British Agriculture Bureau (BAB), Lily Tanui, farmer and Kenyan National Farmers’ Federation, and Professor Rodrigo da Costa Gomes of Embrapa, the Brazilian research organisation.

The meeting, which is expected to have an audience of about 200, reflects the publication this year of a review paper in the Animal Frontiers scientific journal headed by Enrike Maree of Pretoria University that includes examples of innovation on five continents.

This panel marks a milestone as the first such meeting organised by the British meat sector with the goal of presenting the positive developments on nutrition and sustainability in a rigorous scientific manner. Prior to the Belem event, the BMPA had attended COP twice as an observer. About 1,200 meetings are proposed to the organisers and only about 300 are selected, thus, this represents, a significant achievement by the BMPA and Harper Adams University.

Other meetings featuring the sustainability of meat production have been held at the COP 30 event by the International Meat Secretariat (IMS), and the American Meat Institute (AMI).

Framework for discussions

Conference of the Party of COP meetings have been held yearly since 1995 and the first meeting, in Berlin, established the framework for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Leaders, scientists and delegates from more than 190 countries are attending the COP30 event in Belem, which is taking place between 10th and 21st November. COP30 will host approximately 40,000 people, however, leaders from some of the major nations, USA, China, Russia and India, will not be in attendence.
