HCC joins global push for sustainable meat

Wales’s red meat body Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) has deepened its commitment to socially and environmentally responsible farming by joining the Global Roundtable on Sustainable Beef.

HCC recently published its sustainability vision for the future of the lamb and beef sectors – ‘The Welsh Way’ – which outlined Wales’ commitment to producing red meat with very low emissions and setting ambitious goals for the future.

The Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef is an international organisation whose role is to promote beef production which manages natural resources responsibly, supports culture and human rights, and respects animal welfare.

“We can produce excellent quality beef using little more than the abundant resources of grass and rainwater we have at our feet.”

HCC chief executive, Gwyn Howells, said: “In Wales we’re determined to prove that red meat can be produced in tune with our environment while supporting the economy and culture of our country.

“Research carried out for our ‘Welsh Way’ document shows that, when compared with many other farming systems, the non-intensive way that beef is produced here generates far fewer emissions. We can produce excellent quality beef using little more than the abundant resources of grass and rainwater we have at our feet.

“We’re proud to join with like-minded organisations across the World to share research and information, with the aim of ensuring a globally-responsible approach to red meat production.”

Ruaraidh Petre, executive director of the Global Roundtable on Sustainable Beef, said; “GRSB is excited to welcome HCC as its newest member. As our global goals are finalized and released HCC’s insights and support is important.”

The next conference of the Global Roundtable will be held online on 14th April.
