The WorldSkills Butchery final begins today and will see some of the best young butchery from the UK and Ireland compete against each other in a number of tasks performed over two days at the NEC in Birmingham.
The finalists include Hannah Blakey, an apprentice at Leeds City College, who is the first ever female to reach the final and is sponsored by Weddel Swift Distribution.
Weddel Swift regional director, Andy Lea, commented: “We are always pleased to help youngsters coming in to the industry, especially ones with talent such as Hannah’s.
“Recruitment and retention of young staff can be very difficult, so it’s important that we nurture young hopefuls as they are the future of our industry.”
Hannah will be joined by Peter Rushforth of Swans Farm Shop in Mold, Wales; James Gracey of Quails of Dromore in Co Down, Northern Ireland; Dylan Gillespie from Clogher Valley Meats in Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland; Martin Naan from Kettyle Irish Foods in Co Fermanagh, Northern Ireland and Daniel Turley of Aubrey Allen, Coventry.
