NFMFT rebrands as National Craft Butchers

A new name and direction has been unveiled for the National Federation of Meat & Food Traders (NFMFT) by the organisation’s president.

Making the announcement at the federation’s annual members’ meeting, John Mettrick explained that NFMFT will now operate as National Craft Butchers (NCB) and the organisation will “focus its image on a 21st century environment”.

Speaking on behalf of independent craft butchers throughout England and Wales, Mettrick said that throughout its 130-year history the federation has been “successful in adopting titles to try and reflect who we represent”.

From National Federation of Butchers Associations in 1888 to National Federation of Meat Traders at the turn of the 20th century to the more recent name of the National Federation of Meat and Food Traders.

Mettrick added: “If we are going to be successful in future, we must continue to provide our members with unlimited expert advice and represent their interests when and wherever it matters but with a title that has clarity, is easily recognised, and envelops trust.”

A third-generation butcher and small abattoir operator, Mettrick states that he recognises the importance of image. He is an advocate of self-promotion, having appeared on the television programmes Countryfile and Kill It! Cook It! Eat It!.

Mettrick explained that butchers can be confident that National Craft Butchers with its new logo and title will in future better represent members to consumers up and down the country, installing trust in the meat they sell, trust in the skills they have and trust in their craft.

As well as a new logo, the rebrand will feature a new website and promotional literature.

The members’ day also featured a speech from Martin Evans, head of operations at the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and luncheon guest Bob Kennard, policy adviser with the Sustainable Food Trust.
