Fall in lamb prices despite drop in supplies

The price of lambs on liveweight markets has declined in the past week despite a fall in supplies as demand has begun to return to normal levels.

LambIn the week ended 14th September the GB Standard Quality Quotation (SQQ) was down by 4p on the previous week at 179.6p/kg. This left prices 28p higher than the same period in 2015.

AHDB Beef and Lamb says prices have dropped due to demand for lamb falling to more normal levels following both the Love Lamb Week marketing campaign and the Muslim Festival of Eid al Adha at the beginning of September, which led to higher demand.

Prices have been falling despite a decline in the number of throughputs at auction markets.

Supplies during the week ended 14th September declined by 22% compared to the previous week and were 9% lower than the same period a year ago. This follows a drop off in lambs marketed especially for the Eid trade which were seen in the previous week.

Deadweight prices in the week ended 10th September rose to 407.9p/kg, a 3p increase compared to the previous week.
