Quality Pork Ltd opens abattoir following redevelopment

Quality Pork Ltd (QPL), a collaboration between Scottish pig producers Scotlean and Tulip Ltd, has opened its redeveloped abattoir in Brechin in Scotland following major investment.

QPL was formed in 2014 with the aim of developing a modern processing facility for the Scottish pig industry. Since then the facility has benefited from around £10 million in investment from a combination of funding from private investors and a grant of £2.7 million from the Scottish Government Food Processing, Marketing and Collaboration scheme.

A state-of-the-art lairage, kill line, rapid carcass chill system and lorry wash have been installed, which will enable the site to process all Scottish born pigs with a capacity of over 7,500 pigs per week.

QPL chairman, Roderic Bruce, said: “A huge amount of work has been undertaken to secure the long-term future of the Scottish pig industry and this abattoir is a critical part of that plan.”

Slaughtering and primal cutting takes place at Brechin, before the pork is delivered to Tulip Ltd’s network of sites to be further processed into a wide variety of food products and then supplied to a retail and wholesale customers across the UK.

Andrew Saunders, director of Tulip Ltd’s farming division Tulip Agriculture, explained: “The Brechin facility is a great example of what can be achieved through a collaboration between farmer producers and processors – combining our experience of pig farming and food manufacturing with the skills and experience of the Scottish pig farming community.

“We are incredibly proud to be able to source quality Scottish pork and will continue to work with QPL to assist it in helping to shape the future of the Scottish pig industry.”
