Brechin abattoir development well underway

Construction work is now well underway at Brechin abattoir and is on schedule for completion towards the end of this year, according to Quality Pork Limited (QPL), who took ownership of the site at the end of 2014.

The multi million pound investment at the Brechin site will ensure that Scotland has sufficient capacity for all pigs born in Scotland to be slaughtered in Scotland by doubling the slaughter capacity at the abattoir. The state-of-the-art processing facility will produce Specially Selected Pork and Red Tractor Pork for a wide range of domestic and export customers.

“The major investment at Brechin abattoir is a fantastic endorsement of the potential for high volume quality pigmeat production in Scotland. There is now huge potential for Scottish farmers to get involved and ensure that we match and exceed that aspiration,” said Roderic Bruce, chairman of QPL.

Boost for Scottish pig industry

Jim McLaren, chairman of Quality Meat Scotland added: “The investment in additional slaughtering capacity at Brechin is a fantastic boost for the Scottish pig industry.

“The Scottish pig industry has a great deal to be proud of in terms of the professionalism of our producers and the high welfare standards of our pig production. As well as giving our pig farmers a clear signal of confidence in the long-term future of pig production in Scotland, we welcome the return of some of the pig levy income which our industry has been unable to benefit from as a result of pigs being slaughtered south of the border.
