Japan calls halt to Brazilian beef imports over BSE case

According to reports from Reuters Japan is stopping its beef imports from Brazil following the identification of the protein suspected of causing BSE in a cow.

The prion was confirmed following tests conducted here in England by the OIE (the world animal health organisation). However, the 13-year old animal, which died in December 2010 was thought unlikely to have developed the disease had it not died of other causes.

As Brazil is reported to have food-and-mouth disease Japan currently only imports heat-treated beef and not fresh meat from Brazil.
