BPEX trainee of the year

Pig production manager Tony Wright, of Shedden Farms in North Yorkshire, was presented with the BPEX Trainee of the Year Award 2013 at an awards ceremony at the House of Commons last week.

All shortlisted candidates really impressed the judges at the interview, where they were asked to demonstrate how training is benefiting both their career and livestock performance on their unit.

Pig producer Richard Longthorp said on behalf of the judges: “Tony is committed to his own continuous development through training, as well as ensuring all his staff have the opportunity to develop themselves. Tony has been able to improve staff motivation and also improve his work life balance.”

Tony received a £1000 training grant from Zoetis, a £500 cash prize from Pig World and an engraved trophy, presented by farms minister George Eustice.

Nigel Lodge, national veterinary manager for Zoetis said: “It is vital for the future of the pig industry that it is seen as a career with attractive prospects. The award highlights the essential role of training in helping develop careers and in assuring the high standards of food expected by retailers and consumers.”

The runners up for the award, which is sponsored by Zoetis and Pig World, were James O’Callaghan of WM Rigby and Son and Mike Davies of LKL Farming.
